I’ll be the first to admit: it’s hard to find ways to be active after pregnancy. I knew that after I had Cree, I could kiss my extended yoga sessions and dates with the treadmill goodbye. Crying and constant attention – no matter how cute the source – can be a huge obstacle when you’re trying to find ways to start getting fit again. My body was not happy! But then I realized something – if I can’t find ways to stay active without my little man, why not find ways to be active with him? Light bulb moment!! Exercise actually lowers stress levels (and we all know how stressful being a new mom can be) and can help you sleep better. If you feel sluggish or tired, try one of these four simple moves:
Go for a walk
This is definitely the easiest method to get some blood pumping. If your baby can’t walk yet, whip out the stroller and take him or her for a brisk walk around the neighborhood. If you’re feeling up to it, you can even jog – just make sure you have a good jogging stroller (I love the City Mini Jogger!) and that your baby is over six months. If they’re younger, you need to make sure your stroller has a car seat adapter so they won’t get bounced around too much. Now that Cree can walk, he loves taking walks with me. We go twice a day! He’s like a little explorer, all free and running and grabbing everything (under my watchful eye, of course). It’s so cute, and perfect mommy-baby bonding time.
Kissy "push up"
This little move is simple and sweet and really helps stretch your stomach and back muscles. Place baby on his or her back below you, then lay on your stomach and keep your hips on the ground as you lift your torso up. Every time you come down, give baby a little kiss. They think it’s funniest thing in the world!
Front-Carrier Squat
This works well for mommies whose babies haven’t gotten too heavy yet. Strap your little one into the carrier and stand with your feet shoulder width apart, toes slightly turned out. Inhale, and lower your body like you are going to sit in an imaginary chair. Make sure to keep your weight over your heels and navel pulled in! Exhale, then return to standing position. Two or three sets of around 10 reps should have you feeling it. Burn, baby burn!
Alphabet Abs
Lay on your back and place baby next to you. With your arms at your sides (or one loosely around your baby), stretch your legs to the ceiling with your feet together. Slowly, draw the letters of the alphabet with your toes and say them out loud as you do it so baby can hear. You might not be able to get through the whole alphabet at first, but that’s okay! Make sure not to overwork yourself, especially if you are just starting to exercise again. You can even spell out things like your baby’s name. Who knows, maybe one day baby will surprise you and chime in!
One important thing to remember about these exercises and all exercising in general is that it’s typically not safe to try anything too crazy immediately after pregnancy. Your body deserves a little R&R! Some gentle stretches won’t hurt though, and can boost your mood, give you more energy and help ease some post-pregnancy aches and pains. Because every woman is different, make sure to check with your doctor before you start exercising. Shedding post-baby weight can be a long journey, but the key is to start slow and not give up. Keep checking back because I'll be sharing more personal tips on losing post-pregnancy weight. If I could do it, you can too!!
Xx,
Tia

These are some great tips and photo's. I like a little more weight, it helps me with a cold and boosters my immune system. However, I am big busted and often wonder what is actually breast and what is just fat. I like my new boobs after baby number two. On the contrast, I am only interested in aerobics and I don't want to injure my back and spinal cord (car accident in 1992). Yet, my legs are still toned from weightlifting prior to the car accident. I do walk and that clears my mind and helps me with my breathing (cardio-vascular and upper respiratory system).
I am single, and it is imperative that I keep a little more weight on me, for my ehight of 5.5.
Thanks for the blog and the incentive. -

Hes soo cute.., my son Xion and Cree only a day apart.. My sons bday is June 27... I usually do Zumba with my boys.. While they are doing there own goofy dances i get my work out... Or go on walks when not cold.. I was 165 after having my 2nd son but now im 125... From doing zumba and being active with my boys -
I gained 68lbs before giving birth... to an already pretty heavy woman. I am trying so hard to loose weight but being home although the best job in the world I am not as active as I was pre-mommyhood working 60+ hours a week many on my feet.
My new thing is this little jumper my friend got for my little man. He goes in there and I through in a workout DVD with fun music and workout beside him. I often make faces at him and sometimes make the moves extra funny. It's the only time I don't mind someone laughing at me workout. and HEY... I crack up too which I am sure burns a few more calories. -

Hi Tia,
Just like you, my son was breech during my last pregnancy, and I had to give birth via C-section. I am now pregnant with my second, will likely have a C-section again, and am already thinking about post pregnancy work outs. I am more determined this time around to lose the baby weight, as I never really got back to where I would like to be. Do you have any light exercises or stretches you could recommend especially for women who have had a c-section, and can’t quite get back to into a routine too fast?
Thanks,
Joanna -

My son is almost 4 months and I am finding it so hard to get active again. I hope after reading your tips it will help me get out of this no activity funk I'm in. It's just hard with so much to do all the time. -
I was lucky enough to lose a lot of my weight from breastfeeding alone. I think that walking is the easiest way to start exercising and getting back on track with a new baby.
Love Cree's outfit. He looks like a big boy. -

He is such a CUTIE... walking is great exercise, although I dont have a little one, my youngest is 11, we still enjoy our walks...mother/daughter time...ENJOY!!! -
so much more sensible than me trying to do the INSANITY workout 4 weeks after giving birth o_O LOL -
Cree is so cute!!! This pic is great when he's a teenager and seeing this comparison would be a great trip down to "remember when you were little?" conversations. I have those with my kids...they grow so fast! -
Tia,
Those are pretty amazing and creative workouts! I am very impressed, and am going to try them myself! Thank you!
