The other day, someone asked Adam and I whether Aden’s full first name was “Aden John” or “Aden Tanner”. The answer is…neither! Aden actually has two middle names – John and Tanner (John was the middle name of both Adam’s grandfather and mine, Tanner is for Tamera and Aden is for Adam).
Picking a name for your own soon-to-be-born baby boo is hard (especially if you’re like me and have a hard time making up your mind up about anything!). If I can barely decide on a pair of heels, how am I supposed to pick the name of my future child?? When Adam and I finally decided on Aden’s full name – Aden John Tanner Housley – it was such a huge relief. The name just clicked, and I felt like I could finally free up some space in my head to think about other things – like my actual pregnancy! That’s why I wanted to share with you some tips and tricks that might speed up your baby-naming process. I learned these firsthand and from other people along the way, so hopefully they’ll be able to help you!
1.) Do your research
There are so many websites that feature everything from the most common baby names to hundreds of baby names sorted alphabetically. There’s even a website called Nymblr that will come up with new names based on which names you already like. For unique name inspiration, you can browse the motherhood section of entertainment sites like People.com to see what celebs are naming their kids and why – their reasons may be strange, but they might inspire you too. After you’ve browsed, write down a couple that you like so you don’t forget. Which brings me to my second point…
2. Write it down
Unless you have superhuman memory, you probably won’t be able to remember every baby name that has stuck out to you. Keep it organized by jotting down names the minute you think of them; this way, you’ll keep things from slipping through the cracks. Just make sure not to write every single slightly inspiring name down. After all, the point is to have a list of about 5-10 names that you can narrow down, not a giant list that will stress you out more!
3. Look for a pattern
Look at the names you’ve written down and see if there’s a pattern – are they all more traditional? Do they all have one syllable? Are they related to a past memory? It there’s a trend, it usually reflects what’s important to you and can help you keep narrowing things down!
4. It's not just a baby's name
Sometimes we’re so preoccupied with picking the perfect name for our baby, we forget that this lovely baby is going to grow up to become an adult – and their name is not going to change! With that in mind, try to keep away from names that you think may draw unwanted attention to your baby as they grow older. There are tons of names that may be perfect for a baby, but could be inappropriate or embarrassing for an adult. Remember that you can always have a sweet nickname for your little one if you really want to coo at them!
5. Say it out loud
Some names may look nice on paper, but can sound completely different when spoken out loud. You might like the way a name looks, but saying it out loud might be a completely different story. Try saying the names you’ve chosen aloud and picture yourself saying them to your baby every day – you might find that some roll off your tongue more easily or sound more pleasant than other ones.
In the end, the important thing is not to stress! Your baby is going to be born and he or she will be a beautiful little being, no matter what name you choose. Remember that, and the rest will come easily.
Do you have your own baby naming tips to share with me? Tell me in the comments below!
Xx,
Tamera

I have this book called Freakonomics and in it there's a chapter that talks about the statistics of names and how a child's name can have a huge influence of how they grow up and the oppotunites they have and so on...
In this one part, there's a story of a lady who's baby's name is meant to be pronounced 'Shua-teed' but it was actually spelt 'Shithead'.
I thought that was kind of funny....sad...but funny -
My kids have a challenging last name so I choose to give them first & last name combos where they could professionally drop the last name. And in since my husband(now ex) and I both have 'A' first names I named all of our children 'A' names. You just pick somewhere to start and have fun with it. But NOT fun at your children's expense later in life! A name can make or break a kid's professional future. -
I actually helped my mom name my baby brother. I'm a name fanatic :) My name is Madi (Madison) and we wanted his name to start with an M too so we made a list of M names we liked and finally decided on Mason. Then came the time of thinking of a middle name. My middle name is Alexis so I wanted all of my siblings to have Alex in their middle name so we picked Alexander. Yes I know our names are almost the same but that's what we like about it! So our method was to take the name (my name) and twist it around a little bit to make a different one. So you could take Aden and change it into Arden or Allie for a girl or Jayden or Alex for a boy. -
he is the most adorable baby i have seen in a long time. wishing you and Adam a great time taking care of this little bundle of joy :) -

As a teacher, I knew what I didn't want to name my children. I used this rule of thumb.... 1. if your last name is long, make sure the first name is short. 2. if your last name starts with a vowel, then the first name should end in a vowel. This allows for the name to "roll off your tongue" . 3. if your last name starts with a non vowel, then the first name should end in one. Using this rule of thumb, I get compliments about how my kids names sound. -
I picked my son's name as a thanksgiving to the Lord as I struggled to conceive. He is Lizwilenkosi, but we call him Lizwi... -

Oh man I am struggling with baby names! We know we are having a son and I honestly think boys names are sooooo much harder than girls. My daughter is Amaya. If you can think of any boys names that go well with Amaya then please please suggest them. -
I agree Bree.... I am currently looking forward to my third child and researching the meaning and even slightly surfing the zodiac signs has been a guide in naming my soon to be bundle of joy. -
make sure you know the meaning of your child's name you want it to be positive because it is something you will speak on their lives everyday -

My partner and I chose to name our son Cuauhtli. It means "eagle" in Nahuatl which is the Aztec language. It was important for us to teach our son to always remember his roots and what better way to start than with a strong name. -
Hi Tamara. I had so much trouble with my son's dad that all the nurses were getting sleepy on us. We both wanted the first name. I had some great names about 3 of them and my boyfriend had to argue with me based on a good name i came up with that had meaning to it and i'm telling u compromising with a man isn't so great. I couldn't believe his big head came up with "Spencer" which my son would be a Jr. I went with it and let him get the first name, but i got the middle name and last name, We are still together this year still going through the compromising stages. -
Hi Tamera, Well my daughter became 2 years old last November. For me as a new mom, i knew enough to know i wanted to make sure my child's name carried meaning and purpose with it. As a christian i knew i wanted something that represented our faith and carried a powerful meaning like i said earlier. I figured the naming of things and its meaning were(still is) very important to God. So her name is Hebrew and its SAMARA "Protected by God". I gave her the middle name ELAINA since my mom's middle name is "ELAINE".
SAMARA ELAINA. ELAINA means "shining light".
So may ADEN be a "fire" in this world and be a blessing to everyone he meets.. In Jesus name. Blessings Tamera & Adam -
I have a 14 month old son named Aiden Michael. It was hard picking a name for our son because his father and i could not agree on a name. But when i brought up Aiden it kind of just stuck out to us and it was the only name we could agree on, but we looked up what his name meant and it meant fire, which now we see it fits perfect because he is a little fire head. I was also told when picking a name, put the initials together and see if they sound good together or image if your child does something bad and say his first and middle name together, and if it sounds cute but shows you mean business its the right now. Those are the steps that help us choose our sounds name and its perfect. I love that you chose Aden because it is such a cute name and Aden fits your son very well. -

I have two boys and while my name is Chrissy my Husband is Chris. Everyone always makes mention of "cute" that is. We have to laugh because its not like we planned it that way. When I found out I was pregnant with my first son the name was very important to me because my mother always told me "A child's name is the first gift a parent give them and the one they keep the longest." I knew very soon after hearing the words "it's a boy" my son's name would be: Carson. The meaning behind it is son of Car, before I was married my initials were CAR. Now my 2nd is Carter we still kept the CAR prefix so part of mama will always be with them :) -
Wow your child is beautiful!
I just had my first child on November 16, 2012! Honestly, my significant other and I had no issues picking out a name! I know, how lucky?! We had the name picked before we even knew what the sex was!! We came up with Oskar Leonard. Oskar is my great grandfather's name, Oscar Leonard is my grandfather's name, Leonard is my Uncle's name, and Leo is my significant others great uncle's name. It incorporates four wonderful men that mean a lot to us. Perfect!! :)
I love Aden's name! And I love Cree's name. Both of you are fabulous women and great mothers!!
